Fact-checking and Information Verification in South Sudan

It is South Sudan’s first and only independent fact-checking and information verification flagship project established in March 2020 to counter COVID-19 dis/misinformation. Since then, the initiative has continued to grow in its scope of work. By utilizing technology in the battle against dis/misinformation in South Sudan and beyond, 211 Check aims to tackle the three (03) main problems related to information faced by countries in the African continent as they work on tackling the spread of fake news:


These problems can be classified into three main thematic areas:

Awareness

Basic information. Giving citizens the correct information they need through media information literacy (MIL)

Misinformation and disinformation

Correcting and fact-checking wrong and misleading information that if left unchecked might make citizens take decisions that will endanger them.

Providing clear recommendations on actions that citizens can take to prevent or mitigate the risks related to dis/misinformation.

211 Check  is managed and run by Digital Rights Frontlines (DRF), a National Nongovernmental Organisation (NNGO) registered in South Sudan at the National Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) with a registration number 2285.

Digital Rights Frontlines (DRF) is a pioneering organization dedicated to protecting digital rights and promoting media literacy, cyber safety, and countering hate speech and misinformation. Operating in South Sudan, DRF supports key initiatives such as 211Check, South Sudan’s only independent fact-checking platform, and SafetyComm, the country’s first public cyber support center.

 

Through these efforts, DRF empowers communities by providing accurate information, fostering responsible digital practices, and enhancing access to technology. Committed to upholding editorial independence and free expression, DRF strives to build a safer, more informed, and inclusive digital landscape in South Sudan and beyond.

Promoting digital rights and access to technology by creating a framework to increase trust, and mobilize civic action against all forms of hate speech, misinformation, human rights violations, and incitement to violence.

Objectives

Provide a platform for South Sudanese fact-checkers to publish articles/reports on various thematic issues within South Sudan.

Offer editorial support and training on fact-checking to South Sudanese journalists, bloggers,  and content creators.

Enhance the quality and health (fact-based) of information  shared online in South Sudan.

Fact-Checking & Information Verification In South Sudan

211 Check is South Sudan's first and only independent fact-checking and information verification flagship project established by Defyhatenow in March 2020 to counter COVID-19 dis/misinformation but has since grown in its scope of work. It became a signatory of the International Fact-checking Network's (IFCN) Code of Principles in March 2023.
